Voltage Converter FAQs: Troubleshooting & Support
Q: How do I choose the right voltage converter for my 110V or 120V USA appliance?
Look for the wattage rating on your appliance — it’s usually printed on a label near where the power cable connects, on the base or side panel, or listed in the user manual. Once you know the wattage, select a Satronics converter rated equal to or higher than that figure. For a full breakdown of our converter range and how to match the right model to your device, visit our guide: How to Convert 220V to 110V.
Q: My voltage converter is making a humming noise — is this normal?
Yes, a light hum is completely normal and simply comes from the internal transformer at work. If the noise becomes noticeably louder over time, check that the screws on the outer metal casing (top and sides) are properly tightened.
Q: The fuse blew as soon as I switched on my converter. What happened?
This usually means there’s a mismatch between your appliance’s wattage and the converter’s capacity. Double-check your appliance’s power rating and confirm it falls within the recommended range for your converter model. See our voltage converter selection guide for help choosing correctly.
Q: Is it normal for my step-down transformer to feel warm during use?
Yes, mild warmth during operation is expected. However, if the unit becomes hot to the touch, this is a sign you may have the wrong converter for your appliance’s wattage. Depending on the model, your converter will include either a fuse or a circuit breaker for protection — some feature a push-button reset breaker for overload situations, while our higher-capacity models include an additional built-in breaker within the power switch itself.
Q: My two-pin US plug won’t fit into the converter’s front panel socket.
US two-pin plugs often have one pin wider (flatter) than the other, and our converter sockets are designed to accommodate this. Make sure the plug is aligned correctly before inserting — it may feel slightly stiff on first use. Gently wiggling the plug while pushing in usually helps it seat properly.
Q: What does the covered voltage switch at the back of the unit do?
This slider switch should not be exposed or adjusted while the converter is in use within South Africa. Leave the cover in place and do not slide the switch.
Q: Beyond choosing the correct converter, what else should I know before use?
If a 110V or 120V appliance is accidentally plugged directly into a 220V mains socket without a converter, it can cause the appliance’s fuse to blow instantly, damage internal circuitry, or produce unusual sounds. If this happens, switch off the appliance immediately and have it inspected by a qualified electrical technician before use.
Important: If your US appliance was mistakenly connected directly to a 220V outlet without a converter, have it checked by a technician first before purchasing a converter. All Satronics converters comply with local and international safety standards.
