Converting 220V to 110V: A Guide to Step-Down Transformers

If you’re bringing North American appliances into a country running on 220V mains power, a step-down transformer is the solution. This device safely reduces the standard 220V AC supply down to 110V/120V, letting your equipment run exactly as it would back home.

Finding the Right Converter for Your Appliance

The key to safe operation is matching your converter’s capacity to your appliance’s power draw. Check the label or manual for your device’s rating in watts or VA, then select accordingly:

• DW100 — suitable for devices up to 100VA (71W)
• DW300 — suitable for devices up to 300VA (214W)
• DW500 — suitable for devices up to 500VA (357W)
• DW1000 — suitable for devices up to 1000VA (714W)
• DW2000 — suitable for devices up to 2000VA (1428W)
• DW5000 — suitable for devices up to 5000VA (3571W)

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Always leave some headroom between your appliance’s power rating and the converter’s capacity — this is especially important for anything with a motor, or devices you plan to run for extended stretches. When in doubt, size up rather than down.

Power ratings are typically printed on the underside or side panel of the appliance, or listed in the accompanying documentation.

What About Frequency?

One thing a step-down transformer won’t do is adjust the electrical frequency. Most North American appliances are built for 60Hz, whereas the majority of 220V countries run on 50Hz.
